My Lines

Boyd. William M. Boyd of Pike County, Mississippi, is my paternal 3x great-grandfather. William M. Boyd was born in 1826 in Mississippi, United States. He married Clarinda Boutwell around 1848 and they had at least 9 children. William Boyd Jr. was enumerated as a head of household on the 1850 US Federal Census for Pike County, Mississippi on 7 Nov 1850 by Sampson L. Lamkin, Assistant Marshal. His age was given as 24, which would make his year of birth 1826. His occupation was given as "Farmer" and his place of birth as "Mississippi". He was enumerated as not owning real estate as of 1850. According to the census, he could read and write. He was buried at Wesson Cemetery, Wesson, Copiah County, Mississippi, United States.
-
Bruce. My mother's maiden name. This particular Bruce family comes from West Virginia. The earliest Bruce I have on record is William Bruce. He was born in 1782 in Virginia, United States. He married Margaret Ferguson, daughter of Vincent Ferguson and Mary Boyd, on 9 Jul 1808 in Greenup County, Kentucky, United States. William Bruce operated a grist mill before 1 Nov 1822 in Deering, Lawrence County, Ohio, United States. He died on 1 Nov 1822 in Deering, Lawrence County, Ohio, United States. William Bruce was killed by a runaway slave according to David L. Bruce. He was buried after 1 Nov 1822 on the George R. Bruce farm, Deering, Lawrence County, Ohio, United States. The text of William Bruce's grave marker reads: "William Bruce DIED Nov. 1 1822 Aged 40 years". Information on William Bruce comes from a family group record compiled by David L. Bruce.
-
Chandler. My maternal grandmother's maiden name. I have this Chandler line back to Hiram Chandler, father of Gabriel Chandler, who my grandmother identified as her grandfather. She told me that Gabriel's father was called "Harm" and I've found Hiram Chandler enumerated on several census reports on Ancestry.com with Gabriel as a member of his household. I have not yet thoroughly analyzed these census records. Hiram Chandler was born circa 1823 in North Carolina, United States. He married Nancy M. Chandler. He appeared on the 1880 US Census for Hannan District, Mason County, West Virginia, United States, as the head of a household. The census was conducted on 3 Jun 1880. 1880 U. S. census data: white, male, 57 years old, married, Farmer, born in North Carolina, father born in North Carolina, mother born in North Carolina.
-
Greer. My father's grandmother's maiden name. I have a copy of an old genealogist's report, pedigree charts and family group records compiled by Lucille Thornhill McDaniel that trace this family back to Malcolm, Lord Gregor. I personally have used transcribed wills, land records, a marriage bond, DAR records and census records to follow the line to Jesse Greer, who served in the Revolutionary War. He was born in 1757 in either Virginia or North Carolina, American Colonies. He lived between 1776 and 1781 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. He and Judith (sometimes referenced as Judah) Hampton were issued a Marriage Bond on 14 Aug 1779 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. Jesse Greer, Francis Hardgrave and Aquilla Greer all of the County of Wilkes and State of North Carolina signed the bond and promised to pay five hundred Pounds to Richard Caswell, Esq., Governor, if the marriage did not go forward. The bond was signed on 14th day of August AD 1779. He was a captain in the North Carolina Militia from 1781 to 1783, for which service he was granted bounty land in Washington-Sullivan Counties, Tennessee on 12 Jun 1783. He ended military service in 1783 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. He died in 1788 in Washington or Sullivan County, Tennessee, United States. He was buried in 1788 in John Greer Property, Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. He was also known as Jesse Grier.

Jones. I count this line as my greatest success story in tracing my genealogy, because I was able to put my father in touch with relatives on the Jones side of his family. When I started my genealogy research all I knew about my paternal grandfather was that my father's birth certificate said his name was "Walter Jones, Jr." and my father remembered visiting his grandmother in McComb, Mississippi, when he was a small boy. My father's parents were unmarried and their relationship apparently ended with his birth. I was able to find Walter Jones, Jr., living with his parents on the 1930 census. Using the information gathered on that census I was able to fill in some blanks about Walter Jones, Jr., and help my father find his obituary in the library in McComb. When I published that information I was contacted by a member of the Jones family -- a niece of Walter Jones, Jr. She was able to put my father in contact with another cousin who provided us with family group sheets, some photographs and best of all, the opportunity for my father to talk to HER mother, who remembered my grandmother -- solidifying that we had the right group of McComb, Mississippi, Joneses.
The parents of Walter Jones, Jr., were Walter Compere Jones and Henrietta Cotten. Walter Compere Jones was born on 12 Aug 1880 in Mississippi, United States or he was born on 21 Aug 1887 in Sidon, Leflore County, Mississippi, United States. According to the 1930 US Census for Beat 4, McComb City, Pike County, Mississippi, Walter C. Jones was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He married Henrietta Cotten, daughter of Joseph Cotten and Lenore J. Smith, between 1901 and 1903 in McComb, Pike County, Mississippi, United States. The 1930 US Census for Beat 4, McComb City, Pike County, MS, gave the age at first marriage for Walter C. Jones as 22 and for Henrietta Jones as 15, indicating that they had been married for 27 years as of the enumeration of the 1930 Census. Bonnie Jepson gives a marriage date of March 1901, which would have Henrietta and Walter Jones married 29 years as of the 1930 census. He registered for the World War I draft on 12 Sep 1918 at Magnolia, Pike County, Mississippi, United States. His draft registration card indicated that Mr. Jones was 38 years old with a birth date of 12 August 1880. His next-of-kin was listed as his wife, Henry. (with a period as if abbreviated). Their address was 104 Avenue A in McComb, Mississippi. The draft card indicated that Mr. Jones was missing his right foot. Mr. Jones' occupation was shown as "Concrete Worker" and his employer was B. L. Bacot. The card was signed "Walter C. Jones". He and Henrietta Cotten lived on 12 Sep 1918 in 104 Avenue A, McComb, Pike County, Mississippi.
According to the 1930 US Census for Beat 4, McComb City, Pike County, Mississippi, Walter C. Jones owned his own cafe prior to the census enumeration, but was unemployed as of 3 April 1930. He was enumerated as a Head of Household on the 1930 United States Federal Census for Beat 4, McComb City, Pike County, Mississippi, on 3 April 1930. The census taker was Mrs. R. G. Burt. The family's address was given as 927 Avenue D, McComb City, Pike County, Mississippi. The name of the head of house hold was shown as Jones, Walter C., male, white, age at last birthday 49. His marital status was given as "Married" and his age at first marriage was shown as 22. He did not attend school within the year. He was able to read, write and speak English. His place of birth was given as Mississippi and both his father and mother were also listed as having been born in Mississippi. His occupation was listed as "Cafe" and his industry was listed as "Own Cafe" with class of worker listed as "self-employed". However, he was unemployed at the time the census was taken and his line number on the Unemployment Schedule was 12-1A. According to the 1930 census enumeration Walter C. Jones was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. He died on 26 Aug 1961 in McComb, Pike County, Mississippi, United States, at age 81. He was buried on 27 Aug 1961 in McComb, Pike County, Mississippi, United States.

Howell. I have found that Rebecca Howell (see Reid entry below) married a James Howell in Georgia (using the LDS Marriage Index CD) and I have also found a land patent issued to a James Howell in 1840 in Pike County, Mississippi (using the BLM's Land Patent Search Web Site). This does not prove that these are MY Howells, however.
-
Reid. This is my father's grandfather's line. I have traced them back to John William Reid who was born in Mississippi between 1822 and 1826. His tombstone says 1822 but according to the 1850 census he was 24 years old in 1850. He was married to Matilda Gertrude Howell. Rebecca Howell and a "farmhand" named Thomas Howell, age 40, (her son, not her husband, I suspect, since Rebecca was 65 in 1850) lived with John and Matilda Reid at the time of the 1850 census and both of the Howells were born in Georgia.
-
Smith. My maternal grandmother's maternal grandfather's name was Frank Smith. He was born in Kanawha County, West Virginia, and was married to Ella Riley.
-
Williams. Lewis Hampton Williams was one of my three times great-grandfathers. According to the 1850 census he was born in Mississippi. He was married to a woman named Elizabeth, but I don't have a last name for her. Their daughter, Roscena Abi Williams, married John and Matilda Reid's oldest son, James Reid. I just found out his middle name was "Hampton" by searching the land patent records on the Bureau of Land Management's Land Patent Search Site.
My Husband's Lines
-
Blanchette. His mother's maiden name. My mother-in-law has provided me with information tracing the Blanchette line back to a Teddy Blanchette who was probably born in either Maine or New Brunswick (this applies to almost all of his ancestors -- my husband's lineage is French Canadian and Acadian, he's not a mutt like me).
-
Dumont/Dumond. Dumond is a derivation of Dumont. Paul's grandfather was named Dumond and his great-grandmother was a Dumont. (His great-grandfather was a Violet).
-
Sirois. This is Paul's maternal grandmother's maiden name. Ruth Dumond only knew that her mother's father's name was Raymond Sirois.
-
Theriault. Canada and Maine. Paul's paternal grandmother was a Theriault. Her father and grandfather were both named Dennis (or Denis) Theriault.
-
Thibodeau. Canada and Maine. I know that the Thibodeau lineage has been traced back to France. Every Thibodeau in this country apparently descended from the same couple who were among the first Acadian settlers in Port Royal, Canada. They had eighteen children and the several generations I have looked at briefly all had twelve or more children, so it may very well be true. Pierre Thibodeau emigrated to Canada from France around 1650.
-
Violet. Jeaochim Violet was my husband's paternal great-grandfather. My husband's uncle, who is working on the Dumond family history, provided his name. He did not give his son his name, Paul's grandfather was Gilbert Dumond.
