Walter Singleman Jones and Iona Yvonne (Polly) Bruce Jones
Walter Singleman Jones and Iona (Polly) Jones, born Iona Yvonne Bruce, are my parents. Dad was born 2 September 1934 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, and Mom was born 2 September 1937 in Huntington, Cabell County, West Virginia. That's right, they shared the same birthday. They met in Santa Ana, California, in June 1956 and were married on 8 September 1956 in the Yuma County Courthouse, Yuma, Yuma County, Arizona. They were married for almost 47 years before my mother passed away in May 2003. This September (2006) would have been their 50th wedding anniversary. They had five children, ten grandchildren and, to date, ten great-grandchildren with one on the way this year.
My father was a career non-commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps and retired from the Corps in June 1973 at the rank of Master Sergeant (E-8). After the Marine Corps, he worked as a mechanic on the docks of New Orleans. My mom was a military wife and homemaker who worked outside the home in spurts. She worked variously as a hotel clerk, a cook in school cafeterias and the cafeteria at the FBI Academy, a housekeeper at a hotel and a tax preparer at H & R Block. They raised their own five children and two granddaughters with pretty good results.
