Nelson David Bruce, mustered in the United States Army in the 10th Kentucky Cavalry as a private in Company F. In February 1863, he was taken ill with a bad cold. He remained with his regiment, camped at Mount Sterling, Kentucky. The camp was attacked by the Confederate Army and part of the camp was captured. Nelson was among those captured. The enemy decided to parole him because of his illness and weakened condition. He walked back to his camp, but shortly afterwards his condition deteriorated. He got pneumonia and died. He was buried near Mount Sterling by his fellow soldiers.^2,3 He was buried after 27 March 1863 at Near Mount Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky, United States.^2,3

Most likely a typing error.).³ He was the son of William Bruce and Margaret Ferguson.^2,3 George Washington Bruce married Phoebe Ann McKee on 9 December 1839 at Deering, Lawrence County, Ohio, United States.^1,2 According to the compiler of the George Bruce - Anna Houston family group sheet, Anna Houston left her first husband, Vincent Richard Bruce, in 1860 when he was in ill health and moved in with his cousin, George Washington Bruce. They had children together and later migrated to Minnesota. No date or place of marriage is given on the family group sheet.⁴ George Washington Bruce died on 3 March 1892 at Janesville, Waseca County, Minnesota, United States, at age 79.² He died on 9 March 1872 at Janesville, Waseca County, Minnesota, United States, at age 59; Date differs by twenty years from date given on George Bruce - Phoebe McKee and George Bruce - Anna Houston family group records.³ He was buried after 3 March 1892 at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Waseca County, Minnesota, United States.²
     George Washington Bruce was a farmer. In 1859 his wife, Phoebe Ann McKee Bruce, died, leaving him with a houseful of children. His first cousin (son of his father's brother), Vincent Richard Bruce, lived next door. Vincent Bruce was known as "Dirty Dick". He was a former soldier -- a veteran of the Mexican-American and Civil Wars. His wife's name was Anna Houston Bruce. In 1860, Dick was in poor health. Anna left Dick and moved in with George. In the early 1860s, George and Anna and their children piled into a wagon pulled by long-eared mules and moved to Minnesota. In Minnesota he bought a farm on Route 1, Janesville, in Wanseca County.² He lived before 3 March 1892 at Route 1, Janesville, Waseca County, Minnesota, United States.²
