Burrel Howell1 (M)
b. 1814 or 1815, d. after 5 November 1850

Burrel Howell was born in 1814 or 1815 at Georgia, United States.2 He married Mary (?) circa 1846.2 Burrel Howell died after 5 November 1850.2
Burrel Howell purchased 40 acres located at the southwest of the southwest quarter, section 9, township 4N, range 10E, of the Washington Meridian, Pike County, MS, in a Cash-Entry Sale authorized by 3 Stat. 566 of 24 Apr 1820 from the General Land Office, Bureau of Land Management. The BLM accession number for this purchase is MS0450_.090. Certificate number 5057 was issued on 10 Nov 1840.3 As of 5 November 1850, Burrel Howell was also known as Burrel Howel Since Burrel HOWELL bought land in 1840 and Burrel HOWEL was listed on the 1850 census, they are most likely the same person. Since HOWELL is the way most of the other HOWELLs spell their name on the census, I am using HOWELL as the primary spelling of his name.2 Burrel Howel was enumerated as a head of household on the 1850 US Federal Census for Pike County, Mississippi on 5 Nov 1850 by Sampson L. Lamkin, Assistant Marshal. The Howell household was the 405th dwelling and 406th family enumerated. His age was given as 35, which would make his year of birth 1814 or 1815. His occupation was given as "Farmer" and his place of birth as "Georgia". He was enumerated as owning real estate worth $100.00 as of 1850. According to the census, he could read and write.2

Lamkin witnessed the hoh_1850 of John William Reid and US Census 1850 on 7 November 1850 at 3rd Police District, 3rd Police District, Pike County, Mississippi, United States; John Reid was enumerated as a head of household on the 1850 US Federal Census for Pike County, Mississippi on 7 Nov 1850 by Sampson L. Lamkin, Assistant Marshal. His age was given as 24, which would make his year of birth 1825 or 1826. His occupation was given as "Farmer" and his place of birth as "Mississippi". He was listed as owning real estate worth $100.00 as of 1850. According to the census, he could not read and write.5 (Census Taker) Sampson L. Lamkin witnessed the hoh_1850 of Henry Howell and US Census 1850 on 7 November 1850 at 3rd Police District, 3rd Police District, Pike County, Mississippi, United States; Henry Howell was enumerated as a head of household on the 1850 US Federal Census for Pike County, Mississippi on 7 Nov 1850 by Sampson L. Lamkin, Assistant Marshal. The Howell household was the 428th dwelling and 429th family enumerated. His age was given as 26, which would make his year of birth 1823 or 1824. His occupation was given as "Farmer" and his place of birth as "Georgia". He was not enumerated as owning any real estate as of 1850. According to the census, he could not read and write.

The Henry Howell household was the next household surveyed after the John Reid household, which included two family members named "Howell" and the wife of John Reid, whose maiden is known to have been "Howell". In all likelihood, the members of this household are related to those Howells. All of the Howells, except Matilda Reid, were born in Georgia. Matilda Reid, the youngest Howell of these four, was born in Mississippi. This would indicate that Rebecca Howell and her husband migrated to Mississippi sometime between 1823 and 1826 (granting they all are from the same family).6 (Census Taker) Sampson L. Lamkin was the census-taker for at 3rd Police District, 3rd Police District, Pike County, Mississippi, United States, on on 11 November 1850; Doctor D. Boutwell was enumerated as a head of household on the 1850 US Federal Census for Pike County, Mississippi on 11 Nov 1850 by Sampson L. Lamkin, Assistant Marshal. His age was given as 28, which would make his year of birth 1821 or 1822. His occupation was given as "Farmer" and his place of birth as "Mississippi". He was not enumerated as owning any real estate as of 1850. According to the census, he could read and write.1

This would indicate that Rebecca Howell and her husband migrated to Mississippi sometime between 1823 and 1826 (granting they all are from the same family).1
